A real-time reflection on outgrowing the 'well-mannered kid' identity and finding the strength to hear the word 'no' and building the courage to be disliked.
This is so relatable. I’m in my 50s (crazy in itself) and have always been a people pleaser. I’m getting better with age. Learned to say no and hold boundaries in my own business, and this past year have done so in my personal life. My family experienced something major that has pretty much broken us. And it would suit many people if I smiled, towed the line, and forgot it ever happened. But I’m digging my heels in because I’ve reached a point where it doesn’t feel right to be the people pleaser—even if others are thinking less of me.
I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through, Cathy. But I’m so happy to hear that you’re changing it and taking more space |even if others are thinking less than you”. That’s exactly what I’m going to do from this point onwards too. Let’s do this together! I’m so glad you’re here 💙
Thank you for this vulnerable and personal share! I have no doubt you will make it, because I've seen how you meet people in this community. Rooting for you 💙
I so appreciated hearing your journey. I come from an Asian household as well, so I know the feeling of being a people pleaser. I also like to call myself a retired people pleaser. I need to read The Courage to Be Disliked!
Wow what a story. I’m so sorry for your loss, that feeling. It feels like being untethered? Something wants me to say “you’re safe now darling” idk if that’s true but since you’re sharing with us, I think it’s true. I love your words! I also help build brand from scratch, this is a wonderful connection! God bless.
Hey Ashley, I’m totally safe now 💙 you are right. It’s been a long time and slowly processing it one day at a time. I’m glad you’re here! Thank you for connecting and really appreciate the support :)
it’s crazy how i’m literally going through the exact same process as you - coming to terms that i’m a people pleaser and doing a pivot to direct/outbound sales! sending you lots of love on your journey, i’m here w you ✨
